This last July 2024, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center has constituted its thirteenth spinoff, Galtea, the first company in Spain to provide a technological and scientific basis for the technical evaluation and regulatory compliance of Generative AI.

The basis of Galtea’s technology has been developed at BSC by the Language Technologies Unit, which integrates a team of 50 professionals specialized in AI and Natural Language Processing. This unit has extensive experience in the training and evaluation of language models for a variety of tasks and relies on the massive computational power of MareNostrum 5. BSC technology has now been transferred to Galtea, where it will be further refined for commercial applications.

As a member of the X4HPC network, the project was able to access experts and receive guidance in its initial stages. “X4HPC brings academia closer to industry and facilitates the transition from technology to business. At Galtea, they have helped us to validate the technology, to focus it on market needs, and to present the technology to potential customers. It has been a key piece in the first steps of the company”, says Jorge Palomar, researcher at the BSC and CEO of Galtea.

The irruption of large Gen AI models could bring a new revolution in different industrial sectors, with considerable impacts on markets and business models due to their significant potential to reduce costs and improve productivity. However, this new strategic value has not yet turned into real implementation due to the risks involved. The European Artificial Intelligence regulation has been one of the main factors affecting the adoption of generative AI in Europe. This legal framework requires AI models to be safe and to respect users’ fundamental rights. Companies that fail to comply with these regulations could face fines of up to 35 million euros.

Galtea helps companies avoid such sanctions by providing a platform that facilitates compliance assessment. Enhancing trust in AI models, as well as enabling companies to operate within a solid legal framework without risking their reputation.

In the coming months, Galtea intends to focus on business and commercial product development, with the mission of helping as many organisations as possible to make AI assessment and governance simple and stress-free, allowing them to focus on driving innovation and growth.
