PCarTrials – Heart Digital Twin for Atrial Fibrillation

Overview

PCarTrials creates a virtual digital twin of a patient’s heart using clinical data. This digital heart model allows doctors and researchers to test different treatment options on a computer before applying them to the real patient, supporting more personalized and effective care in cardiology.

Digital heart twins help personalize treatment and improve outcomes for the world’s leading cause of death

Problem

Heart diseases are among the most common causes of illness and death worldwide. However, many treatments are still designed based on average patient responses and do not fully account for how differently each person’s heart behaves. This makes it difficult to select the most effective therapy for individual patients and increases the risk of suboptimal treatment outcomes.

Solution

PCarTrials uses patient-specific clinical data, such as medical scans and diagnostic tests to build a detailed virtual model of the heart that reflects how it functions in reality. This digital twin can then be used to simulate and compare different therapies, medical devices or drug effects in a virtual environment. By testing treatment options in advance, clinicians can identify which approach is most likely to work best for a specific patient, reducing uncertainty and supporting more precise and safer medical decisions.

Success Story

  • Industry: Biomedical engineering
  • Results: Patient data was used to test cardiac therapies and medical devices in virtual patients, including the comparison of pacing strategies and the assessment of cardiac safety for new drugs.
  • Impact:This approach delivered results faster than traditional studies, reduced development time and testing costs, supported regulatory processes and helped identify safety issues earlier, reducing risks for patients.
