Climate change is pushing the planet toward a new era of extreme weather events—larger, more frequent, and more unpredictable than ever before. From record-breaking wildfires and devastating floods to intensifying hurricanes and prolonged heatwaves, the scale of future disasters will challenge even the most advanced response systems. Traditional crisis management tools alone will not be enough to handle the overwhelming volume of information and the speed at which events escalate.

The CREXDATA (Critical Action Planning over Extreme-Scale Data) project is developing a next-generation platform designed for real-time critical situation management at an unprecedented scale. By integrating extreme-scale data from meteorological models, environmental sensors, autonomous systems, and, crucially, geolocated social media posts, CREXDATA provides a dynamic and adaptive approach to disaster response.

Social media is often the first source of on-the-ground information during emergencies, with affected individuals, first responders, and local agencies sharing critical updates. However, the challenge is no longer just access to information—it’s making sense of it in real time. The sheer volume, multilingual nature, and unstructured format of social media posts require advanced AI solutions. CREXDATA leverages large language models (LLMs) to filter, interpret, and extract key insights, transforming chaotic streams of data into actionable intelligence.

In the face of climate-induced disasters on an unprecedented scale, AI-powered situational awareness will be essential to ensuring faster, more effective responses. The future of crisis management lies in harnessing the power of extreme-scale data to protect lives and communities.
