Mineral dust influences climate, air quality, and public health, making accurate forecasting critical for both scientific and societal needs. The Barcelona Dust Regional Center leads the charge in predicting and mitigating the effects of dust storms by coordinating the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Sand and Dust Storms Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) across Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
In this session, we’ll explore how cutting-edge numerical simulations, combined with satellite observations, enable precise short-term dust storm forecasts. More importantly, we’ll showcase how these forecasts are made accessible to the public through open-access platforms and smartphone-ready applications—empowering individuals, businesses, and policymakers to make informed decisions in real time.
Join us to discover how advanced technology and mobile innovation are revolutionizing environmental forecasting and public awareness on a global scale.
